Texas Lutheran Volleyball Wins First SCAC Championship

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO -- The Texas Lutheran volleyball team defeated Colorado College in four sets, 25-23, 19-25, 25-13, 25-15, to clinch its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championship in program history and first conference championship since 2007 on Saturday at Reid Arena on the campus of Colorado College.

The win marks the program's second ever win over Colorado College with both occurrences happening this season. Texas Lutheran (27-9, 11-5 SCAC) is the first team not named Trinity, Southwestern, or Colorado College to win the SCAC Volleyball Championship since Rhodes College in 1991. In addition to being its first SCAC championship in the sport of volleyball, it is the school's 25th SCAC championship since joining the conference prior to the 2013-14 academic year. Texas Lutheran's victory on Colorado College's home court marks just the third time in the history of the conference tournament (which is always hosted at a predetermined site) that the home team has been beaten in the championship match on its own floor. Trinity beat Austin College in the 2007 championship match on the 'Roos' home floor and Trinity defeated Centre College on the Colonels' home floor in the 1993 title match. In the history of the tournament, it was just the third appearance for the fourth seed in the conference final. DePauw University (2008) and Trinity (2015) both lost as four seeds prior to TLU breaking through on Saturday.

With Saturday's win, Texas Lutheran brought its 2022 win total to 27, tying for the most in the program's NCAA era history.

Madison Weisinger (Friendswood/Friendswood) had a great match, finishing with 11 kills, seven blocks, four digs, two service aces, and an assist, while hitting .455 in the match. After the match, Weisinger would be named the 2022 SCAC Tournament MVP. Maddy Schultz (Richmond/Needville) finished with 10 kills and five blocks.

Brylie Nedd (Sealy/Sealy) had eight kills and five blocks. Keriann Kallus (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) also finished with five blocks as Texas Lutheran recorded 14.0 blocks as a team - the second most in a match this season, only trailing the 15.0 the Bulldogs had in their first win over Colorado College.

Shavonne Respondek (San Antonio/Madison) had 22 assists and 11 digs, while Julia Chew (Cypress/Cy-Fair) had 16 assists and three service aces. Lexi Morris (Victoria/Victoria West) led the Bulldogs with 14 digs and three service aces.

After the match, Weisinger, Morris, and Tanyse Moehrig (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) were named to the 2022 SCAC All-Tournament Team.

The Bulldogs will now learn their postseason draw on the NCAA Selection Show on ncaa.com on Monday at 12 PM CST.
