Texas Lutheran Falls to Southwestern

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran dropped its first home match of the season Friday night, falling to Southwestern, 22-25, 22-25, 20-25 at Memorial Gymnasium.

Texas Lutheran (23-7, 10-3 SCAC) was out hit by Southwestern (14-9, 10-3 SCAC) .150 to .115. Texas Lutheran held a 59-57 advantage in digs but the Pirates out blocked the Bulldogs, a team that has thrived off the block all season long, 6.0 to 4.0.

Maddy Schultz (Richmond/Needville) led Texas Lutheran with 11 kills. Madison Weisinger (Friendswood/Friendswood) finished with 10 kills and three blocks. Shavonne Respondek (San Antonio/Madison) registered her 17th double-double of the season with 18 assists and 16 digs.

Libero Lexi Morris (Victoria/Victoria West) finished with 22 digs.

Texas Lutheran led 9-6 in the opening set but following a 22-22 tie, Southwestern pulled away and won the opening set before repeating their 22-25 victory in the second set.

The two teams would play a competitive third set before the Pirates would finish the sweep with a third set 20-25 win.

Texas Lutheran has their first off weekend of the season before returning to Memorial Gymnasium next weekend as they host the final SCAC Divisional of the 2022 regular season. The Bulldogs open the divisional with matches against Schreiner and Colorado College on Saturday, Oct. 29, with first serve scheduled for 1:15 PM & 6 PM with the 6 PM match serving as Senior Night as TLU volleyball honors its seven seniors.
