Bulldogs Fall to OLLU, 3-2

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The Bulldogs concluded their mid-week back-to-back and their 2022 non-conference schedule as they faced the Our Lady of the Lake Saints at Mabee Gymnasium Wednesday night. The Bulldogs were able to force them to five sets before falling to the Saints 21-25, 25-19, 25-19, 22-25, 8-15.

Prior to Wednesday's match, both teams honored the late Angelina Martinez, a former OLLU volleyball player who tragically passed away on October 9th.

In what was an emotional night for both teams, the Saints, who entered the contest on an eight-match win streak, came out and took the first set behind a rowdy Mabee Gymnasium crowd.

The Bulldogs would respond by winning the next two sets 25-19 to take a 2-1 lead.

The Bulldogs nursed at least a three point lead for the majority of the fourth set before a late set rally from the Saints forced a decisive fifth set.

Texas Lutheran would drop the fifth set 8-15. The set was overshadowed by a late-match injury to fifth-year senior middle blocker Peyton Sulak (Needville/Needville).

Senior Madison Weisinger (Friendswood/Friendswood) put away a team-high 11 kills and nine blocks - one shy of her career-high. Maddy Schultz (Richmond/Needville) added nine kills and four blocks while Tanyse Moehrig (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) and Brylie Nedd (Sealy/Sealy) added seven kills each. Nedd would also finish witn a season-high 16 digs.

Lexi Morris (Victoria/Victoria West) led the Bulldogs with 26 digs. Shavonne Respondek (San Antonio/Madison) added 13 digs and 19 assists and Julia Chew (Cypress/Cy-Fair) added 10 digs and 10 assists.

The Bulldogs return to Memorial Gymnasium and conference play Friday night as they welcome to Southwestern University Pirates as the two teams battle for second place in the SCAC as well as NCAA West Region positioning.
