Volleyball Sweeps Huston-Tillotson in Austin

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran volleyball picked up its third sweep in a row and 12th sweep of the season, knocking off Huston-Tillotson. 25-18, 27-25, 25-14, on Tuesday at Mary E. Branch Gymnasium on the campus of Huston-Tillotson University.

The Bulldogs (23-5, 10-2 SCAC), who hit .179 in the match, had to battle to extra points in the second set but were able to complete the sweep of the Lady Rams.

The Bulldogs had a huge day at the service line registering 13 service aces as a team led by sophomore setter Shavonne Respondek (San Antonio/Madison) who matched her career-high with seven aces on the night while adding 17 assists. Respondek returns to the top of the SCAC aces list with a conference-high 44 aces on the season. Maddy Schultz (Richmond/Needville) and Tanyse Moehrig (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) each finished with eight kills a piece to lead the Bulldogs. Peyton Sulak (Needville/Needville) finished with six kills, four digs, two aces, and a block.

Emily Mixon (Woodville/Woodville) added three kills and Keriann Kallus (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) had two blocks and a kill.

Lexi Morris (Victoria/Victoria West), who was named SCAC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season on Monday, finished with a match-high 14 digs and two kills.

After trailing early, a 6-0 run with Shavonne Respondek at the service line that featured four aces gave TLU a 15-11 lead and the Bulldogs never looked back - taking the set 25-18.

Huston-Tillotson gave Texas Lutheran all it could handle in the second set, taking a 22-17 lead before the Bulldogs were able to tie it up 24-all. The Bulldogs finished the set on a 10-3 run to edge out the set 27-25.

The Bulldogs put the match away in emphatic fashion, securing the match with a 25-14 third set win.

Texas Lutheran has a quick turnaround as they conclude their non-conference schedule with a match against Our Lady of the Lake at Mabee Gymnasium on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 7 PM. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
