Volleyball Sweeps Centenary as Best Start since Joining SCAC Continues

SHERMAN, Texas -- Maddy Schultz (Richmond/Needville) and Maddy Weisinger (Friendswood/Friendswood) had nine kills each to lead the Texas Lutheran volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-21, 25-12 win over Centenary Saturday morning in SCAC play at Hughey Gymnasium on the campus of Austin College.

Texas Lutheran moves to 22-5 and notched its 11th sweep of the season en route to a 10-2 mark in the SCAC. The 2022 season is the first time the Bulldogs have tallied double-digit conference wins since joining the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in the fall of 2013. The 22-win mark marks the most since 2007's 22-win season when Texas Lutheran was still a member of the American Southwest Conference (ASC) as they continue their pursuit to return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since that 2007 season.

The Bulldogs hit .194 as a team with six aces and nine blocks while holding Centenary to an ice cold .044 hitting percentage. Shavonne Respondek (San Antonio/Madison) had a match-high 19 assists and added seven digs and an ace. Libero Lexi Morris (Victoria/Victoria West) had 19 digs, six assists, and an ace.

Madison Weisinger, who was ninth nationally with 63 block assists entering this weekend's matches, added six block assists Saturday morning. Julia Chew (Cypress/Cy-Fair) came just short of a double-double with 14 assists and nine digs.

After the first set started 11-11, TLU used a 4-0 run to take a 15-11 lead. Peyton Sulak (Needville/Needville) would register four of her five first set kills in the final stretch as Texas Lutheran won the opening set, 25-20.

A string of 4-0 runs in addition to a 10-6 run to close the set gave Texas Lutheran a 25-21 win and a 2-0 lead.

Texas Lutheran utilized a mid-set 9-0 run to jump out to a huge lead in the third set, taking a 15-4 lead. The Bulldogs would hold on to the massive lead to close out the sweep.

The Bulldogs (22-5, 10-2) will return to non-conference action as they travel to Huston-Tillotson on Tuesday, Oct. 18, and Our Lady of the Lake on Wednesday. Oct. 19, for their final non-conference matches of the season. The Bulldogs match against the Rams will take place at 6 PM in Mary E. Branch Gymnasium.
