Texas Lutheran Knocks Off Colorado College, 3-1

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO -- Maddy Schultz (Richmond/Needville) had 14 kills and five blocks to lead the Texas Lutheran volleyball team to a 25-19, 25-27, 25-12, 25-15 victory Friday night against Colorado College in Colorado Springs.

This marks a historic victory for Texas Lutheran as they picked up their first win in program history over the Tigers, a perennial Top 25 AVCA program and a program that currently sits in 26th in the most recent AVCA poll, as they entered Friday night's match 0-24 in prior matchups dating back to their first matchup in 2012.

Texas Lutheran hit a season-high .336 as a team with 60 kills, three aces, and 15 blocks to move to 19-4 and 7-1 in the SCAC and win their ninth straight match.

Madison Weisinger (Friendswood/Friendswood) recorded 13 kills behind a .476 hitting percentage and tallied a team-high nine blocks. The nine blocks ties for the fifth most in a single-match in Texas Lutheran volleyball history. Brylie Nedd (Sealy/Sealy) hit .455 with 11 kills, 12 digs, and five blocks and setter Shavonne Respondek (San Antonio/Madison) had a team-high 29 assists to go along with nine digs. Lexi Morris (Victoria/Victoria West) recorded a match-high 23 digs. With the 55 total digs between Friday's two matches, Morris moves into sole possession of second place on the Texas Lutheran all-time digs list with her career mark now at 2,250 digs - surpassing Brandi Bradley (1994-97, 2,212 digs) in the record book. Morris now only trails Megan Lee (2011-14) on the all-time leaderboard as Lee holds the record with 2,409 digs.

Texas Lutheran held Colorado College to a .181 hitting percentage - one of the Tigers lowest of the season.

Junior Tanyse Moehrig (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) led the Bulldogs in the opening set with five kills and a block in an opener that saw Texas Lutheran start on a 6-2 run. Texas Lutheran would lead by as much as 22-14 before putting away the first set 25-19. Moehrig would finish the match with 10 kills and three blocks.

The second set was much more competitive as the Tigers and Bulldogs had eight ties and three lead changes before the Tigers evened the match 1-1 on their home floor with a 27-25 second set victory.

Texas Lutheran would dominate from the beginning of the third set through the rest of the match. Five kills and four blocks from Madison Weisinger and five kills from Maddy Schultz put the Bulldogs in position to take the third set comfortably, 25-12.

Texas Lutheran avoided a fifth set by putting away the Tigers, 25-15, for a fourth set victory. Texas Lutheran would lead the set wire-to-wire, closing the match on a 10-5 run with Brylie Nedd dominating the set with five kills and Emily Mixon (Woodville/Woodville) getting crucial kills down the stretch to seal the 3-1 victory.

Texas Lutheran will face the 2nd-ranked Trinity University at 10 AM MDT/11 AM CST Saturday in a matchup between the SCAC's current top two teams for their final match of this weekend's SCAC Divisional. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
