Volleyball Takes Down Centenary, 3-1

GEORGETOWN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran volleyball took down Centenary (LA), 3-1, 25-18, 25-15, 21-25, 25-21, Sunday morning at the Robertson Center on the campus of Southwestern University.

The Bulldogs extended their win streak to five games and improved to 15-4 (5-1 SCAC) on the season. This marks the fastest Texas Lutheran has reached the 15-win mark since the 2008 season that saw Texas Lutheran start 15-2 and finish 20-8.

Texas Lutheran was led by 11 kills and seven blocks from Madison Weisinger (Friendswood/Friendswood). Maddy Schultz (Richmond/Needville) finished with 10 kills, three blocks and two digs. Tanyse Moehrig (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) finished with eight kills and a block and Peyton Sulak (Needville/Needville) finished with seven kills, three blocks, and three service aces.

Shavonne Respondek (San Antonio/Madison) dished out 27 assists and nine digs and two kills. Julia Chew (Cypress/Cy-Fair) tallied 13 assists and a match-high six service aces. Chew and Respondek currently share the SCAC lead with 32 service aces each, teammate Peyton Sulak is in fourth with 28 aces. As a team, Texas Lutheran leads the conference with 140 service aces so far this season.

Lexi Morris (Victoria/Victoria West) led the Bulldogs with 29 digs and added two assists.

Four kills from Maddy Schultz led the way as she helped lead the Bulldogs to a 25-18 first set victory.

Fellow senior and Needville product, Peyton Sulak, dominated in the second set with five kills, two service aces, and a block as Texas Lutheran cruised to a 25-15 second set win.

The Ladies of Centenary were able to avoid the sweep in the third set - taking a 25-21 third set win.

Texas Lutheran started the fourth set with a 15-5 run - boosted by four service aces from Julia Chew - and would put the match away, 25-21, in a set that saw senior Madison Weisinger lead the Bulldogs down the stretch - finishing with four kills and three blocks in the match clinching set.

Texas Lutheran returns to Memorial Gymnasium for a non-conference doubleheader against the Yellowjackets of Howard Payne and the Rams of Huston-Tillotson on Tuesday, Oct. 4. The matches are scheduled to start at 4 PM and 6:30 PM. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
