Volleyball Rallies to Beat St. Thomas, 3-1

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran volleyball rallied from dropping the first set to take down University of St. Thomas, 21-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-22, on Tuesday night at Memorial Gymnasium.

The Bulldogs (11-4, 2-1 SCAC) have a quick turnaround and are back home tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept. 28, at 6 PM against Mary Hardin-Baylor. Tomorrow is High School Night at Memorial Gymnasium as the TLU Volleyball welcomes local high school teams to come out and see the facilities and catch what should be a thriller between the Bulldogs and Crusaders.

Maddy Schultz (Richmond/Needville) led Texas Lutheran with 14 kills, while hitting .423 in the match. She added four digs and two blocks.

Madison Weisinger (Friendswood/Friendswood) finished with nine kills and .450 hitting percentage. She also added two blocks and an assist.

Tanyse Moehrig (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) came off the bench to finish with eight kills and two digs while Peyton Sulak (Needville/Needville) finished with seven kills, a block, and a service ace.

Shavonne Respondek (San Antonio/Madison) dished out 23 assists to go with five digs, three kills, one service ace, and one block. Lexi Morris (Victoria/Victoria West) continued her streak of double-digit digs in every match with a team-high 17 digs to go with two assists and one ace.

In an opening set that featured 11 ties and three lead changes, St. Thomas took advantage of seven errors from Texas Lutheran to take a first set win, 21-25.

The second set started tied up 4-4 and just as St. Thomas began to pull away with a 12-6 run, the Bulldogs responded with a 13-4 run to close the set to tie the match, 1-1.

Texas Lutheran rolled to a big 25-17 win in the third set to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Madison Weisinger was a huge part of the Bulldogs taking the third set with four kills. Shavonne Respondek had eight assists in this set alone as six different Bulldogs registered a kill in the set.

The fourth set was yet another dog fight, with seven ties in the set. The match would reach a 21-21 score before the Bulldogs pulled away to close out the match with a 25-22 win.
