Texas Lutheran Knocks Off St. Thomas, 3-1

HOUSTON, Texas -- Behind the one-two punch of Tanyse Moehrig's (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) 18 kills and Maddy Schultz's (Richmond/Needville) 16 kills, the Texas Lutheran volleyball team took down University of St. Thomas 3-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) opener for both teams Saturday afternoon in St. Thomas's Jerabeck Center in Houston, Texas.

With the 25-22, 25-18, 14-25, 25-20 win, Texas Lutheran moves to 10-3 on the season. Texas Lutheran hit .236 as a team, led by Moehrig's .607 hitting percentage, and tallied six service aces. Madison Weisinger (Friendswood/Friendswood) had 10 kills with a block and Peyton Sulak (Needville/Needville) had six kills in addition to two service aces. Shavonne Respondek notched a double-double with a match-high 19 assists to go along with her 14 digs. Libero Lexi Morris (Victoria/Victoria West) had a match-high three service aces and 14 digs.

The Bulldogs had an early advantage in the first set but the Celts were able to keep it tight throughout the latter part of the set, but the Bulldogs were able to hold them off to take the first set, 25-22.

St. Thomas kept it close throughout the second set but a 13 kill showing between Moehrig and Schultz proved to be too much for the Celts as the Bulldogs pulled away, 25-18, with a chance to sweep.

St. Thomas avoided the sweep with a 25-14 third set win.

Texas Lutheran put the match away in a back-and-forth fourth set that saw four ties and three lead changes. Tanyse Moehrig led the Bulldogs with eight kills in the decisive set and Lexi Morris registered two of her three service aces as Texas Lutheran sealed a conference opening victory with a 25-20 fourth set win.
