TLU Volleyball smashes Scranton (PA), 3-0

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Sophomore Brylie Nedd (Sealy/Sealy) led Texas Lutheran with eight kills and the Bulldogs smashed Scranton (PA) - a 2021 NCAA Tournament qualifier - 3-0, 25-13, 25-11, 25-18 in Calgaard Gymnasium Friday afternoon for their second and final match in the Trinity Fall Classic.

Texas Lutheran hit .313 as a team and held the Royals to a .071 hitting percentage as a team. Sophomore setter Shavonne Respondek (San Antonio/Madison) tallied 18 assists and 11 digs and senior libero Lexi Morris (Victoria/Victoria West) recorded 16 digs in the match. Junior Tanyse Moehrig (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) and senior Maddy Schultz (Richmond/Needville) each contributed seven kills. Peyton Sulak (Needville/Needville) hit .714 with five kills.

Nedd and Julia Chew (Cypress/Cy-Fair) each had a match-high four service aces.

The Bulldogs started the match well, hitting .385 and taking the first set 25-13. Moehrig had four kills and hit .429, while Nedd had three service aces along with three kills and a .750 hitting percentage.

Texas Lutheran kept cruising through the second set, winning 25-11, as the Bulldogs never sacrificed the lead through the first two sets. Maddy Schultz had three kills in the second set to lead the Bulldogs.

Texas Lutheran opened the third set a little slower before pulling away for a 25-18 win to clinch the sweep with Nedd leading with four kills in the final set.

Texas Lutheran ends their grueling season opening stretch of 12 matches in 16 days with a 9-3 record including two wins over 2021 NCAA Tournament qualifiers, Transylvania and Scranton.

Texas Lutheran travels to Houston, Texas, for a SCAC opening doubleheader against St. Thomas and Southwestern on Saturday, Sept. 24.
