TLU Clinches No. 2 Seed in SCAC Tournament with 4-2 Victory

SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran women's soccer team clinched the No. 2 seed in next week's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Tournament with a 4-2 win over Southwestern in their regular season finale at Gustafson Field.

With the win, the Bulldogs match the program record set a season ago for conference winning percentage - matching last season's mark of .786 - concluding the regular season 5-1-1 in the SCAC.

The Bulldogs (9-4-4, 5-1-1 SCAC) struck first in the 17th minute with a goal by the SCAC's leading scorer - Alyssa Simien (San Antonio/Warren), who netted her 11th goal of the season via an assist from the SCAC's second leading scorer Klarissa Martinez (Houston/Incarnate Word Academy). An own goal via a Simien free kick doubled the Bulldogs lead just two minutes later before the Pirates (7-8-2, 4-2-1 SCAC) quickly cut the Bulldogs lead in half with a goal - this time in the correct net to bring the game to 2-1.

Martinez would net a goal of her own, her tenth, and the eventual game winner - her fourth of the season - in the 24th minute via an assist from Ana Parra (San Antonio/Brennan). The Pirates would shrink the TLU lead to 3-2 in the 31st minute.

Despite the high-scoring opening half, the Bulldogs would never trail and would add an extra insurance goal in the second half via an Ana Parra assisted goal from Callie Brame (San Antonio/Churchill). With the assist, Parra would move back into the conference lead in the category, record her first career multi-assist outing and move into a tie with Sioned Kirkpatrick (2012-15) for sixth in program history with 15 career assists.

Southwestern outshot TLU in the game 18-10 but the Bulldogs held a 9-8 advantage in shots on goal. Charleigh Phipps (Dripping Springs/Dripping Springs) and Alysa Marquez (Miami, FL/Dr. Michael Krop) would record three saves each in goal for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs and Pirates will meet again in the SCAC Tournament semifinals on Friday, Nov. 3 at 2:30 PM at SaberCats Stadium in Houston, Texas, in a rematch of the 2022 SCAC Tournament Semifinals. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
