Bulldogs Sink Southwestern, 68-51

SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran women's basketball team picked up their fourth win in their last five games on Tuesday with a 68-51 win over Southwestern on Tuesday. Texas Lutheran has won five of the last six matchups against Southwestern, earning a regular season series sweep the past two seasons.

Texas Lutheran's SCAC leading defense had a huge impact on Tuesday's game forcing 27 Southwestern turnovers on the night for one of TLU's highest turnover outputs of the season. Lauren Sansano (San Antonio/FEAST) led the Bulldogs with 20 points (6-6 FT) and three assists off the bench. Brianna Wilson (Austin/Cotulla) joined her in double-figures with a career-high 13 points and six rebounds off the bench. Kailey Mulkey (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) led TLU starters with eight points, four rebounds, and three steals. Davi'Yanna Jones (San Antonio/Stevens), who was named SCAC Player of the Week prior to TLU's bye week, returned to the floor recording four points and dishing out a career-high four assists.

Southwestern would start the game on a 7-0 run, but TLU would rally to take a 14-10 lead after the first quarter.

The freshman duo of Lauren Sansano and Brianna Wilson would take over in the second quarter - combining for 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting - as Texas Lutheran would carry its largest lead of the half, 15 points, into halftime as the Bulldogs led 39-24. TLU's massive 25-14 quarter was aided by six forced turnovers.

TLu would score eight unanswered to start the half, but would slow over the remainder of the third quarter - only scoring four points in the final six minutes of the period. TLU would take its largest lead of the game, 23 points, in the third quarter but Southwestern would shrink the deficit to 16 points leaving a massive hill to climb to mount a fourth quarter comeback.

The Bulldogs lead proved insurmountable as the Bulldogs lead never shrunk into single digits for the entire second half.

Up next, Texas Lutheran prepares for their final home game of the 2023 season as they welcome the Colorado College Tigers on Friday, Feb. 10. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM CST at Memorial Gymnasium. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com. Friday will also act as Senior Night as Texas Lutheran will honor its two graduating seniors: Sydney Shaw (Lockhart/Lockhart) and Taylor Skurka (New Braunfels/Steele).
