Bulldogs Outlast Howard Payne, 60-50

SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran women's basketball team came away with a 60-50 win over the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets Tuesday night inside Memorial Gymnasium. Texas Lutheran improved to 2-3 on the season.

Freshman Lauren Sansano (San Antonio/FEAST) continued her stellar start to the season, registering 16 points, including nine in the second quarter, while grabbing three rebounds and recording two steals. Kailee Mulkey (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) was just shy of a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing eight rebounds to lead the team.

The Texas Lutheran defense continued its pesky ways, forcing 26 Howard Payne turnovers, including 12 steals. Texas Lutheran would take advantage of their opportunities scoring a third of their points off turnovers and 19 points off fast breaks.

After a slow start, Texas Lutheran had a huge second quarter, shooting 50% from the field. Texas Lutheran would start the quarter on an 8-0 run - their largest run of the night to take a 17-16 lead. Sansano would score seven straight for TLU as the run stretched to 13-2. Juliana Tapia (San Antonio/O'Connor) would add five points in the quarter while Hannah Gallegos (San Antonio/Harlan) would dish out three assists in addition to her three points in the second quarter.

Texas Lutheran rode that momentum through the second half as the Bulldogs and Yellow Jackets mirrored each other in the second half with near identical numbers and third and fourth quarter totals of 16-11 with the Bulldogs holding steady in each.

Sansano and Mulkey would take over in the fourth to seal the victory - combining for 13 of the Bulldogs' 16 points in the quarter.

The Bulldogs return to action on Nov. 27 as they continue their non-conference slate against the Concordia University Tornados. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 PM at Memorial Gymnasium. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
