Texas Lutheran Blasts Past Schreiner, 12-0

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- No. 5 Texas Lutheran blasted past sixth-seeded Schreiner to open the second day of the 2023 SCAC Tournament, winning 12-0 in five innings for their 17th run-rule victory of the season. With the victory, the Bulldogs advanced to Saturday night's elimination game as they will face the winner of this afternoon's game between Southwestern and Centenary at 5:30 PM. The winner of that game will play again at 8 PM. All streaming and live stats links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.

The win was highlighted by a two-hit gem in the circle from Sydney Ouellette (Corpus Christi/Gregory-Portland) and a 2-for-3, four RBI day from 2023 SCAC Newcomer of the Year, Serena Gonzalez (Corpus Christi/Foy H. Moody).

A one-out walk to Linzee Leal (Corpus Christi/Mary Carroll) led to the Bulldogs first base runner in the bottom of the first. Leal would then steal second and third and score on a wild pitch to get the Bulldogs on the scoreboard. Gonzalez would drive in her first run of the game with an RBI-single, scoring Madison Johnson (Round Rock/Round Rock). An RBI double from senior Bailey Hudgeons (Dripping Springs/Dripping Springs) would score Gonzalez and give TLU a 3-0 lead after the first.

Two singles and a walk loaded the bases to start the second inning before Linzee Leal would drive in two runs with a two-RBI single to extend the TLU lead to 5-0.

After Ouellette stranded a pair in the third, Texas Lutheran would once again load the bases to start the inning. Annie Kay (Sinton/Sinton), Caelee Clark (Montgomery/Lake Creek), and Madison Johnson would each drive in runs as TLU put the game in run-rule territory with an 8-0 lead. The inning continued with Serena Gonzalez stepping to the plate with the bases loaded and clearing them with a bases clearing double. With the three-run double, Gonzalez became the program's single-season RBI leader with 55 RBIs this season, surpassing the previous record of 54 held by Taylor Yancey in 2016. Gonzalez is now three RBIs shy of the SCAC single-season record held by DePauw's Emma Minx (58, 2011).

Texas Lutheran added one more insurance run in the fourth as the Bulldogs loaded the bases for the third consecutive inning and an RBI single from Caelee Clark would score Reagan Hillis (Cedar Park/Cedar Park) to bring the game to its 12-0 final score.

Ouellette improved to 8-0 and lowered her ERA to 1.38 on the season, going the distance for her fourth shutout. She struck out three and allowed just two hits and three walks to the Mountaineers.

Eight Bulldogs registered a hit in the game with six bringing in a run. Caelee Clark finished 2-for-3 with two RBI while Linzee Leal finished 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.
