Bulldogs Complete Sweep of Schreiner

SEGUIN, Texas -- No. 4 Texas Lutheran (13-2, 3-0) swept the series over Schreiner (6-12, 0-3) with a 7-1 win Sunday afternoon at Ed Kruse Stadium. The Bulldogs claimed their first SCAC series win of the 2023 season with the win.

Sydney Ouellette (Corpus Christi/Gregory-Portland) was a force in the circle, throwing a four-hit complete game, allowing just one run to pick up her second win of the season. Ouellete would allow just one hit in her final five innings of work on Sunday.

Schreiner plated the first run of the game on a groundout in the first after a sacrifice bunt allowed the Mountaineers base runner to go first to third. It was just the third game this season that the Bulldogs have trailed.

Five Bulldogs registered a hit in the game with Serena Gonzalez (Corpus Christi/Foy H. Moody) bringing in a trio, and Madison Johnson (Round Rock/Round Rock), Isabella Rodriguez (Pearland/Pearland) and Bailey Hudgeons (Dripping Springs/Dripping Springs) each recording one RBI.

Texas Lutheran responded with a three-run bottom of the inning, plating the runs on five hits. A sacrifice fly from Johnson scored the first run of the game for the Bulldogs. The next at-bat Serena Gonzalez drove in Linzee Leal (Corpus Christi/Mary Carroll). With the hit, Gonzalez extended her hit streak to 14 games. The Bulldogs would load the bases for Isabella Rordiguez who would hit an RBI single to left field to extend the Bulldogs lead to 3-1.

Texas Lutheran pushed three more across in the fourth on three hits. The Bulldogs would once again load the bases before a Serena Gonzalez single would drive in two runs for TLU. Bailey Hudgeons would then drive in Madison Johnson to push the TLU lead to 6-1.

Caelee Clark (Montgomery/Lake Creek) would score the Bulldogs final run in the fifth on a Schreiner error. Clark was a standout for TLU, going 4-for-4 with four stolen bases and three runs scored on Sunday. Clark now leads NCAA Division-III with 25 stolen bases and is second in the SCAC with a .556 batting average. Her four stolen bases Sunday fell one short of the TLU single-game record of five by Kelly Jurden in 2021 and she is now four stolen bases short of Jurden's freshman stolen base record of 29 in 2018. Clark paced the Bulldogs in the conference-opening series going a combined 8-for-10 (.800) on the weekend with three RBI, six stolen bases, and five runs scored from the leadoff spot in the Bulldog lineup.

On the season, Texas Lutheran is outscoring the opposition 109-24.

The Bulldogs will enjoy their spring break before playing a non-conference doubleheader vs. Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday, March 21, at Ed Kruse Stadium. First pitch is slated for 6 & 8 PM. All streaming and stat links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.
