Bulldogs Run-Rule Schreiner Twice to Open SCAC Play

SEGUIN, Texas -- No. 4 Texas Lutheran (12-2) secured its first conference series of the season on Saturday at Ed Kruse Stadium with two five-inning, run-rule victories over Schreiner.

TLU won its fifth game by mercy-rule and seventh game via shutout in the team's 14 games played this season. The win marks the fourth consecutive shutout victory for TLU.

Seven different Bulldogs drove in runs in game one's 10-0 run-rule victory over the Mountaineers. Senior Ashlyn Strother (Seabrook/Clear Falls) collected her sixth win and fourth shutout of the season, tossing four innings and surrendering just two hits to go with four strikeouts. With the win, Strother ties Cathy McBride (1994-97) for second in program history with 52 career wins.

The Bulldogs got to work early with a seven-run first inning - plating the runs on seven hits and a Schreiner error. Madison Johnson (Round Rock/Round Rock) continued her productive start to the season with an RBI single to get the scoring started. Serena Gonzalez (Corpus Christi/Foy H. Moody) would drive in fellow Corpus Christi native Linzee Leal (Corpus Christi/Mary Carroll) before Bailey Hudgeons (Dripping Springs/Dripping Springs) would drive in Johnson. After two more Bulldogs would reach base, Isabella Rodriguez (Pearland/Pearland) would drive in Laura Hernandez (Missouri City/Ridge Point). The Bulldogs would make a complete trip through the lineup in the first as leadoff hitter Caelee Clark (Montgomery/Lake Creek) would drive in Rodriguez and Reagan Hillis (Cedar Park/Cedar Park). Leal would cross the final run of the Bulldogs explosive inning - driving in Annie Kay (Sinton/Sinton) on an infield single to bring the TLU lead to 7-0.

TLU added another run in the second from another RBI single from Bailey Hudgeons. TLU put up two more runs in the fourth behind an RBI single from Kloee Wells (Dayton/Dayton) and Kylee Jack scoring (Richwood/Brazoswood) on a Schreiner error.

Bailey Hudgeons paced the Bulldogs in game one, going 2-for-2 with 2 RBI.

Texas Lutheran won its fourth consecutive game by shutout later in the afternoon, run-ruling the Mountaineers, 9-0, to clinch the series.

The Bulldogs got a home run by Laura Hernandez and three RBI from freshman Harleigh Russell (Fort Worth/Boswell). Amanda White (Lockhart/Lockhart) recorded her fourth consecutive winning decision and fifth win of the season, throwing a two-hit shutout with six strikeouts. Sydney Ouellette (Corpus Christi/Gregory-Portland) made her second relief appearance of the day in game two - tossing her second hitless, shutout inning of the day in game two.

The bats came alive in the second inning with the Bulldogs plating four runs on four hits all with two outs. Harleigh Russell would hit a bases-clearing triple to get the Bulldogs offense going in the second. A bunt single from Caelee Clark would score Russell, pushing the TLU lead to 4-0.

TLU plated runs in each of their last three innings they were at the plate. In the third, Laura Hernandez blasted her third home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field, to give TLU a 6-0 lead. A bases loaded walk to Bailey Hudgeons followed by Linzee Leal scoring on a Laura Hernandez fielder's choice extended the Bulldogs lead to 8-0. Freshman utility Jaelin Ornelas (Amarillo/Caprock) would record her first collegiate hit and RBI with an RBI single to right center to bring the game to its final score of 9-0.

The wins give TLU its 52nd straight SCAC series win dating back to their entry into the conference in 2014 and 64th consecutive SCAC win - winning 116 of their last 117 conference games.
