Bulldogs Split Friday Doubleheader against Hardin-Simmons

SEGUIN, Texas -- The No. 4 Texas Lutheran softball team split their non-conference doubleheader against Hardin-Simmons at Ed Kruse Stadium Friday night.

After being held scoreless in through the first two innings, Caelee Clark (Montgomery/Lake Creek) would get the scoring started in the second with an RBI single and Madison Johnson (Round Rock/Round Rock) would score Clark with an RBI single of her own to extend the Bulldogs lead to 2-0 through three innings.

After the Cowgirls cut the TLU lead in half, the Bulldogs would continue rolling in the fourth inning - scoring five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Freshman Serena Gonzalez (Corpus Christi/Foy H. Moody) started the inning with a leadoff home run - her third of the season. Madison Johnson would collect her second and third RBI of the game with a two-RBI single extending the Bulldogs lead to 5-1. An RBI single from Bailey Hudgeons (Dripping Springs/Dripping Springs) kept the inning going before Madison Johnson would score on a throwing error from the Cowgirls catcher bringing the game to its final score of 7-1.

Ashlyn Strother (Seabrook/Clear Falls), fresh off her SCAC Pitcher of the Week honor, would take the winning decision for the Bulldogs. Strother would toss a complete game, allowing one run on seven hits while striking out 13.

Game two would make for a tighter contest. The Cowgirls would chase TLU starter Sydney Ouellette (Corpus Christi/Gregory-Portland) after scoring three runs in the first inning.

TLU would respond with a run of their own via a sacrifice fly from Bailey Hudgeons to shrink the lead to 3-1.

TLU would take the lead, 4-3, in the third following a two-RBI double from Serena Gonzalez and an RBI double from Isabella Rodriguez (Pearland/Pearland). Linzee Leal (Corpus Christi/Mary Carroll) would score in the fourth inning for the Bulldogs final run of the game.

The Bulldogs would be held hitless in the final three innings - falling to the Cowgirls, 6-5. The Bulldogs would have runners in scorer's position in the fifth and sixth innings but would be kept off the scoreboard by the Cowgirls.

Amanda White (Lockhart/Lockhart) threw seven innings in relief for Texas Lutheran in game two and took the losing decision, her second loss of the season, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out seven.

The Bulldogs continue non-conference action on Saturday, Feb. 25, with a doubleheader against 20th-ranked Babson at 1 and 3 PM at Ed Kruse Stadium. All streaming and stat links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.
