Twitero Named West Region Field Athlete of the Year

SEGUIN, Texas -- Ahead of his opportunity to be deemed a national champion and All-American this week at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in Rochester, New York, Texas Lutheran junior jumper Gerrit Twitero (McQueeney/Seguin) has been named the USTFCCCA West Region Men's Field Athlete of the Year, the association announced Tuesday evening.

Twitero has been a leader for Texas Lutheran and pivotal in a decorated season that has seen the Bulldogs ranked as high as number seven in the country and Twitero himself enters the NCAA National Championships atop the leaderboard with a school record mark of 2.10m.

Twitero becomes the first Bulldog to win the award and only the second male TLU athlete to earn Regional Athlete of the Year honors, joining Marquis Brown who earned Men's Track Athlete of the Year for the Southeast Region in 2017.

Twitero, who hails from McQueeney, Texas and is a local Seguin High School graduate, is ranked first nationally in the high jump at 2.10m (6-10¾). He won the high jump at three out of the past four meets in which he competed, which included the SCAC Outdoor Championships where he topped 2.05m (6-8¾) for the crown.

Twitero owns the high jump records in both indoor and outdoor track and field, qualifying for the NCAA Division-III Indoor Track and Field National Championships in March with a school record mark of 2.05m. Twitero will compete this week in Rochester with a Division-III qualifying mark of 2.10m as he pursues national champion and All-American status.
