Herman Sets Meet Record as Men's Track and Field Opens SCAC Championships
SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran men's track and field program opened the 2022 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championships with record-breaking marks and impressive performances on Saturday at the Multi-Sport Stadium on the campus of Trinity University. Texas Lutheran sits in a tie for first with host Trinity in the men's standings with 104 points.
Zachary Herman (Austin/Lake Travis) headlined the Bulldogs conference championship opening day with a personal, school and meet record 53.18-meter throw in the hammer throw - claiming his first individual championship of 2022. Texas Lutheran would tally 25 points in total with Scottie Reyes (Dilley/Dilley), Weston Geiger (Shiner/St. Paul), Chase Cook (Austin/McNeil), and Riley Denman (Pearland/Pearland) all earning points pushing the Texas Lutheran point total to 35. Geiger and Denman would throw personal bests of 42.71m and 39.07m respectively.
Troy Stephenson (Marble Falls/Marble Falls) and Ezra Acero (San Antonio/Harlan) added 10 points with third and fourth-place finishes in the pole vault respectively.
Caimen McDonough (Canyon Lake/Canyon Lake) and Niko Rios (San Antonio/Brennan) would add seven points in the long jump with McDonough bringing home a third-place finish with a 7.15-meter mark. McDonough would finish as the runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.65 seconds.
Scottie Reyes claimed his second consecutive SCAC title in the shot put with a personal record toss of 15.93-meters. Zachary Herman would finish second with a 14.46-meter toss as Texas Lutheran would add 20 points in total from the event.
Freshman Elijah Jefferson (San Antonio/Construction Careers Academy) would claim the third individual title for Texas Lutheran's men's track winning the 200-meter dash with a personal best time of 21.61 seconds. Jefferson would add eight more points as a member of the TLU 4x100 relay team comprised of Jefferson, Wyatt Wilson (New Braunfels/New Braunfels), Ezrael Powell (San Antonio/Marshall), and Bryce Powell-Chimene (Dayton/Dayton) that would finish in runner-up position with a time of 41.34 seconds - a season best. Powell, Wilson, and Niko Rios would all finish in the top five in the 200m dash.
