Bulldogs lose to St. Thomas in Double OT

HOUSTON, TX -- The Bulldogs lost to St. Thomas (TX), 3-2, in another double overtime contest. Both matches with St. Thomas (TX) went into double overtime this season. The Bulldogs move to 5-5-1 (1-3 SCAC) while the Celts improve to 7-2-2 (3-0 SCAC).

Each time one team scored the other would have an answer for it on a night in which momentum swung back and forth between the two squads. The Celts scored the first goal of the match in the 9th minute to give them an early 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs answered in the 32nd minute when Nestor Ayala (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Wagner) netted a goal - his second of the season - off of an assist from Marco Rodriguez (Houston/Jersey Village) to knot the score, 1-1. This is where the score would stay through halftime.

The Bulldogs would get on the board first thanks to a goal from Luis Green (Monterrey, Mexico/Smithson Valley), his 8th of the season, via an assist from Jair Ortega (Dripping Springs/Dripping Springs). With that goal, Green moved into second all-time in TLU Men's Soccer history in goals (57) and points (127) passing Ariel Larre '96 in both instances (56 goals, 126 points, 1993-96). With time running out on a potential comeback, the Celts responded with a goal of their own in the 88th minute to tie the game, 2-2, and send the game into overtime.

The first overtime was mostly actionless with only one shot from St. Thomas, but in the second overtime the Celts were able to net the coveted golden goal in the 105th minute to secure a victory.

Texas Lutheran outshot St. Thomas 11-10 and held a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. It was a foul heavy game as the two teams accumulated 32 fouls and 12 cards.

The Bulldogs continue their conference road trip as they head to Shreveport, LA to face the Gents of Centenary College on Sunday at 12 PM. All streaming and stat links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.
