Bulldogs Fall to No. 22 UMHB, 55-21

SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran football team fell to No. 22 Mary Hardin-Baylor, 55-21, Saturday afternoon at Bulldog Stadium in their 2023 American Southwest Conference opener.

Wide receiver Yawanathan McKenzie (San Antonio/Cornerstone Christian) led the Bulldogs (1-4) with 29 receiving yards and a touchdown on three receptions. Quarterback Caden Bosanko (San Antonio/East Central), who made his first collegiate start on Saturday, went 17-of2-7 through the air for 98 yards and two touchdowns and an interception. Bosanko would add 17 yards rushing and touchdown on the ground. DaKory Willis (Flatonia/Flatonia) led the Bulldogs with 58 yards rushing on 16 carries.

After UMHB (2-3) took a 28-0 lead through a quarter and a half, the Bulldogs responded with a 11-play, 70-yard drive capped off by a nine-yard rushing touchdown by Bosanko.

The Bulldogs would find the end zone twice in the final minute of Saturday's contest as Yawanathan McKenzie and Ja'Mare Nichols (San Antonio/Roosevelt) would score their first collegiate touchdowns.

Punter Cameron Welch (New Braunfels/Canyon), who's been one of the best punters in NCAA Division-III statistically this season, punted eight times for 264 yards with a long of 50 yards on Saturday.

Troy Tomaselli (Castroville/Cornerstone Christian) led the Bulldogs defensively with seven tackles (five solo) while Tristan Smith (New Braunfels/Canyon) tallied five tackles (four solo), including 1.5 for loss. Christian Monroe (College Station/College Station) recorded the elusive first sack for the Bulldogs this season for one of his three tackles.

The Bulldogs will travel to Abilene next Saturday, October 14, to take on the 18th-ranked Hardin-Simmons Cowboys at 1 PM. All streaming and stat links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.
