TLU Baseball Falls in SCAC Championship Game

CLEBURNE, Texas -- In what made for a back-and-forth game, Texas Lutheran Baseball was unable to respond to a three-run 11th inning from Centenary as the Bulldogs fell 10-8 in extra innings on Sunday at La Moderna Field in Cleburne, Texas. The Bulldogs will face the Gents in a rematch on Monday at noon to crown the 2024 SCAC Tournament Champion with a berth to an NCAA Regional also on the line. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.

Chase Bourgeois (League City/Clear Falls) led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two RBIs, while Adam Peavy (Houston/Memorial) went 2-for-4 with a double and a solo home run. Tyler Post (San Antonio/Johnson) tied the program record for walks in a game, recording five walks on Sunday, scoring once.

Johnny Garza Jr. (San Antonio/McCollum) started and pitched five innings, allowing five runs on six hits and four walks. He struck out two batters and did not factor in the decision.

Nolan McInvale (Poth/Poth) pitched six innings in relief and allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks.

The game was scoreless for the first two innings until the Gents exploded for four runs on three hits and a TLU error to take an early 4-0 lead.

Texas Lutheran responded with five runs in the bottom of the fourth to jump ahead of the Gents, 5-4. After a leadoff single from Hayden Kesselring (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) and a one-out double from Adam Peavy, Carson Draehn (Brenham/Brenham) would hit a two-RBI single up the middle to get the Bulldogs on the board. Chase Bourgeois would hit an RBI single before Aric Vasquez (San Antonio/Brandeis) hit a two-out, two RBI single to conclude the scoring in the inning.

Centenary got a run back in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly and then the Gents took the lead, 6-5, in the top of the seventh.

Adam Peavy would hit his fifth home run of the season in the seventh to tie the game at six. The Gents would get the run back in the top of the eighth.

Down to their last out, Chase Bourgeois would tie the game at seven with a two-out RBI single through the left side to send the game to extras.

The two teams went scoreless in the tenth before the Gents got the scoring started in the 11th with three runs on three hits and an error. The Bulldogs attempted a two-out rally in the bottom of the inning as Mason Goudeau (Liberty/Liberty) drove in a run on an RBI fielder's choice to load the bases but the Bulldogs would strand the bases loaded to end the game.
