TLU Baseball Takes Centenary Series with 11-2 Win

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Baseball blasted five extra base hits and beat Centenary, 11-2, in their final game at Katt-Isbel Field in the 2024 season to win the series on Saturday.

The Bulldogs (21-14, 10-8 SCAC) were led by their seniors in their final home game. Asher Bonnell (Round Rock/Stony Point) finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs and Aric Vasquez (San Antonio/Brandeis) went 2-for-6 with a three-RBI triple while Johnny Garza Jr. (San Antonio/McCollum) tossed a 153-pitch complete game.

Garza put together the longest outing of his career, pitching his first career complete-game and allowing just two runs on seven hits and six walks. He struck out three batters and recorded his fourth win of the season.

After allowing a run in the first, Texas Lutheran jumped all over Centenary with a four-run second inning. A walk, error, and single loaded the bases for the Bulldogs to start the inning before an infield single from Chance Greene (Round Rock/Stony Point) tied the game 1-all. For the second straight game, Aric Vasquez would come to the plate with the bases loaded and clear them, this time with a bases clearing, three RBI triple to give TLU a 4-1 lead.

An RBI triple from Chase Bourgeois (League City/Clear Falls) and an RBI single from Asher Bonnell in the third inning made the score 6-1.

Bourgeois, who would finish a home run shy of the cycle Saturday, would rip an RBI double for the first of two runs in the fifth. Bonnell would single to right center to bring in Bourgeois to extend the TLU lead to 8-1.

Centenary would scratch a run across in the eighth to bring the game to 8-2.

Texas Lutheran would bring the game to its final score with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. After loading the bases with one out, senior Dylan Swanson (Katy/Katy) would rip an RBI single to right field to keep the offense going. Asher Bonnell would wrap his 4-for-5 day with an RBI single to left field that would lead to two runs scoring following a Centenary error, bringing the game to its final score of 11-2.

The Bulldogs, who enter the final weekend of the regular series still in SCAC Tournament contention, will end the regular season with a three-day, three-game series against the Southwestern University Pirates starting on Friday night at 6 PM in Georgetown. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
