TLU Falls in Series Opener to Schreiner, 13-9

KERRVILLE, Texas -- Schreiner struck for five runs in the eighth inning to lift the SCAC foes to a 13-9 victory over Texas Lutheran in the series opener at Bob Henry Field in Kerrville.

The Bulldogs dropped to 15-13 on the season and 6-4 in SCAC play, while the Mountaineers improved to 15-12 and 4-6 in conference play.

TLU returns to action on Monday when they return to Kerrville to finish the weather altered series. The contests are scheduled for 12 and 3 PM. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.

TLU reliever Brendan Beard (Coldspring/Coldspring-Oakhurst) was charged with the loss after tossing 1.2 innings and giving up five runs on four hits. Blade Strzelczyk (San Antonio/East Central) started on the mound for the Bulldogs - throwing 5.1 innings and allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits.

Schreiner struck first in the bottom of the second as an RBI single gave the Mountaineers an early 1-0 lead.

TLU responded with three runs of their own in the top of the third. RBI singles from Tyler Post (San Antonio/Johnson) and Niko Garcia (Houston/Langham Creek) would give TLU a 2-1 lead before a sacrifice fly from Alec Sanchez (Waxahachie/Waxahachie) would cross the final run of the inning to give TLU a 3-1 lead.

Schreiner would throw another haymaker in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs on five hits to take a 5-3 lead.

Post would score on a Schreiner error in the top of the fifth to cut the Mountaineer lead in half, before recording four runs on three hits in the sixth. Following a leadoff walk to Randy Huerta (New Braunfels/New Braunfels), Kyle Gates (La Vernia/La Vernia) would hit a pinch-hit RBI triple to tie the game 5-5. An RBI single from Blake Cappadona (Mont Belvieu/Barbers Hill) would score Gates and give TLU a 6-5 lead. Tyler Post would stay hot, hitting a two out, two-run homer to extend the Bulldogs lead to 8-5. The homer is his fifth in his last six games - leading the SCAC with eight on the season.

Post posted a 3-for-4 line with two singles, a homer, a walk, and three RBI. Alec Sanchez would finish 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Schreiner would respond in the bottom of the sixth with three runs on three hits and would take advantage of two TLU errors to tie the game 8-8.

TLU would load the bases in the eighth inning but would only be able to cross one run on an RBI groundout from Alec Sanchez to take a 9-8 lead into the bottom of the eighth.

The Mountaineers exploded for five runs on six hits in the bottom of the inning to take a 13-9 lead and, after another lead off walk to Huerta, would retire the side in the top of the ninth - ending the game with a double play.
