Bulldogs Sweep DePauw in Midweek Doubleheader

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran baseball cruised to a midweek sweep of DePauw University Wednesday night at Katt-Isbel Field. The Bulldogs shut out the Tigers in game one, picking up a 7-0 win in seven innings, before run-ruling the Tigers 21-11 in seven innings in game two.

Adam Peavy (Houston/Memorial) made his first career start and pitched three scoreless innings with a strikeout. He allowed just two hits and earned his first career victory. He also helped himself at the plate, driving in two runs with a two-RBI double in the first inning.

Tyler Post (San Antonio/Johnson) drove in three runs to lead the Bulldogs, while Chase Bourgeois (League City/Clear Falls), Drew Burnett (Seguin/Seguin), Hayden Kesselring (New Braunfels/New Braunfels), and Johnny Garza Jr. (San Antonio/McCollum) all drove in a run a piece. Carson Draehn (Brenham/Brenham) went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Kyle Gates (La Vernia/La Vernia) went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

TLU started off hot with four runs on three hits in the first inning. Kyle Gates singled and Carson Draehn reached on an error to put two runners on. Tyler Post then drove in Gates with an RBI single up the middle. Adam Peavy would drive in Post and Draehn with an RBI double to left center. A Hayden Kesslering groundout would score Chance Greene (Round Rock/Stony Point) to bring the score to 4-0.

The Bulldogs would tack on another run in the fourth inning courtesy of a Chase Bourgeois RBI double.

TLU added three runs in the fifth to extend the lead to 8-0. Tyler Post jump started the inning with a two-run home run. The home run was Post's SCAC-leading sixth of the season and increased his SCAC-leading RBI total to 31. A two-out single from Johnny Garza Jr. drove in Adam Peavy for the final run of the inning.

Drew Burnett drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Draehn.

Blake Cappadona (Mont Belvieu/Barbers Hill) and Keene Kreusler (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) each pitched two hitless shutout innings in relief to close the 7-inning game.

Texas Lutheran rode the massive swings of Kai Hendershot (San Antonio/Johnson), Asher Bonnell (Round Rock/Stony Point), and Alec Sanchez (Waxahachie/Waxahachie) in game two as TLU coasted back to .500 on the season in a 21-11 slugfest.

Hendershot, Bonnell, and Sanchez combined for 10 of Texas Lutheran's 17 RBIs on the night.

After allowing two runs in the top of the first, TLU responded with an explosive seven run bottom of the inning. TLU loaded the bases with one out before Alec Sanchez tied the game at two with a two RBI double. After yet another one of TLU's eight walks on the night reloaded the bases, a Wade Tittle (Caldwell/Caldwell) fielder's choice would score Niko Garcia (Houston/Langham Creek) setting the stage for senior Kai Hendershot's grand slam, the first home run of his career and first hit of the season, to shoot the Bulldogs out to a 7-2 lead.

Mason Goudeau (Liberty/Liberty) extended TLU's lead to 8-2 with a second inning RBI double before scoring himself to bring the score to 9-2.

Texas Lutheran would break the game open in the fourth, Wade Tittle would plate a run with an RBI double down the left field line. RJ Carrillo (Alice/Alice) would drive in Tittle with a single through the left side. Asher Bonnell would cap the inning with a two-RBI single up the middle to give TLU a 13-3 lead.

After allowing another run in the fifth, Texas Lutheran would respond with three more runs in the sixth inning with Goudeau, Garcia, and Sanchez all driving in runs to put the game in run-rule territory with a score of 16-4.

Walks would prove detrimental in the top of the seventh as six walks, two hits, and an error would translate to seven Tiger runs - shrinking the once insurmountable lead to 16-11.

Texas Lutheran would respond with one final barrage of runs of their own, walking it off in the bottom of the seventh after scoring five runs in the bottom half of the inning to bring the game to its final score of 21-11.

Johnny Garza Jr. earned the win in relief, allowing one run on two hits and a walk in 2.1 innings of work while striking out two.

The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs will travel to Weimar, Texas, to continue SCAC play on Friday at Veterans Park against St. Thomas. First pitch is scheduled for 6 PM. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
