TLU Baseball Blasts DeSales, 10-1

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Baseball cruised to a 10-1 win over DeSales Tuesday night at Katt-Isbel Field. The Bulldogs improved to 5-7 on the season ahead of a stretch of 6-of-7 games on the road.

Diego Vinton (Richmond/George Ranch), who was named SCAC Pitcher of the Week on Monday, made his second career start on Tuesday, allowing just one unearned run one three hits in two innings. Brendan Beard (Coldspring/Coldspring-Oakhurst) would earn the win in relief, striking out four batters in two no-hit innings of relief.

DeSales would score their only run in the second inning and the Bulldogs had an immediate answer to the opposing Bulldog run, scoring a run of their own courtesy of an RBI double from Mason Goudeau (Liberty/Liberty).

Texas Lutheran would take a 2-1 lead after a perfectly executed double steal that saw Goudeau steal home in the bottom of the fourth.

TLU methodically added to the lead, scoring in every inning from the fourth inning on.

The Bulldogs crossed four runs in the fifth inning for their highest scoring inning of the night. Tyler Post (San Antonio/Johnson) tripled two runs home at the top of the inning before Chance Greene (Round Rock/Stony Point) hit an RBI single to score Post. Niko Garcia (Houston/Langham Creek) would double down the left field line to score the final run of the inning.

Aric Vasquez (San Antonio/Brandeis) would tack on another run in the sixth - driving in Holden Philippus (San Antonio/San Antonio Christian). Two more runs came home in the seventh inning to give the Bulldogs a 9-1 lead. A Niko Garcia sacrifice fly would get the first run across as Mason Goudeau scored his third run of the game. After a walk, the Bulldogs would steal home for the second time on the night as Alec Sanchez (Waxahachie/Waxahachie) would steal home to increase the Bulldogs cushion to 9-1.

Freshman Garrett Helpenstill (Houston/Lutheran South), who made his TLU debut Tuesday night, drove in the final run with an RBI single in his first collegiate at-bat to extend the Bulldogs lead to 10-1.

Johnny Garza Jr. (San Antonio/McCollum) pitched two no-hit innings to close Tuesday's contest.

Texas Lutheran will head to Marshall, Texas, this weekend for a three-game series against the Tigers with Friday's opener scheduled for a 7 PM first pitch. All streaming and live stat links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.
