TLU Baseball Falls to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 8-5

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Baseball held a 5-2 lead before Claremont-Mudd-Scripps scored six unanswered runs to win 8-5 Sunday afternoon at Katt-Isbel Field.

Holden Philippus (San Antonio/San Antonio Christian) went 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored, while Tyler Post (San Antonio/Johnson) went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps struck first, crossing a run in the first inning, but Texas Lutheran immediately responded in the bottom of the inning as a sacrifice fly from Aric Vasquez (San Antonio/Brandeis) scored Philippus to tie the game at one-all.

A solo home run in the third inning from CMS gave the Stags a 2-1 lead. Texas Lutheran struck for two runs on two hits in the bottom half of the inning as a bunt single from Holden Philippus and a sacrifice fly from Tyler Post gave TLU a 3-2 lead.

Philippus extended the lead to 5-2 with a two-run homer to left center in the fifth inning.

CMS scored one run in the sixth inning to trim the Bulldogs lead to 5-3. The Stags would score three runs in the seventh and two runs in the eighth to overtake the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs had a chance to minimize the damage in the seventh but would strand two runners.

Blade Strzelczyk (San Antonio/East Central), who normally toes the mound as the Bulldogs closer, made his first collegiate start on Sunday allowing eight runs (four earned) on 10 hits while striking out nine batters.

Texas Lutheran will get a week-plus break before returning to the diamond in Belton, Texas, as the Bulldogs travel to face Mary Hardin-Baylor in non-conference action on Tuesday, Feb. 28. First pitch is scheduled for 6 PM. All streaming and stat links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.
