Texas Lutheran Drops Tri-Meet to Division-II Azusa Pacific/Hawai'i Pacific

SEGUIN, Texas -- The Bulldogs fell to stout competition from NCAA Division-II members Azusa Pacific (CA) and Hawai'i Pacific in the first tri-meet in program history on Saturday evening with the Cougars of Azusa Pacific winning the meet outright with 279.425 points.

The Cougars (2-2) won the event and were followed by Hawai'i Pacific with 276.47 points while Texas Lutheran (0-4) took third with a score of 99.85.

Texas Lutheran scored a new program-high 16.90 in the compulsory, including a 7.70 in pyramid, 7.20 in toss, and 2.00 in tumbling out of the highest possible value of 10. Hawai'i Pacific would win this event with a total score of 37.50.

After the acro event, TLU continued to trail both squads, who each began the 2023 season ranked in the top 10 of the NCATA Preseason Coaches' Poll. Texas Lutheran earned a total score of 13.95, consisting of a 4.45 in the fifth element, 6.35 in the sixth element, and 3.15 in the seventh element.

TLU would trail both teams entering halftime, with Azusa Pacific narrowly leading Hawai'i Pacific 95.20-94.75 with TLU in third with 42.5 points.

The Cougars took the toss event, with event scores being 28.85, 28.55 from HPU, and 22.40 from TLU, a new program-high. Texas Lutheran earned a 7.15 in salto, 7.35 in synchronized, and 7.95 in open.
 
Azusa Pacific also took the tumbling event, outscoring TLU 56.725 to 48.50, a new program-high anchored by a solo performance throughout all six heats of the event from freshman Phoenix Cosley (Round Rock/Hendrickson).
