Records fall again, more wins for TLU Track & Field student-athletes
SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran senior shot put athlete Garrett Garza (Round Rock/Stony Point) moved to the top of the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field performance list with a toss of 17.39 meters (57 feet, 0.75 inches) at this weekend's Texas State Bobcat Invitational.
Sprinter Darren Jones (Waller/Waller) moved into the No. 2 spot nationally in the 100 with a time of 10.57 seconds at Texas State.
Both the Garza shot put distance and the Jones 100 time are new school records.
Garza finished fifth in the shot put out of 36 throwers at the Texas State meet. The event and meet consisted largely of NCAA DI athletes.
Garza broke his own school record in the shot put for a third time this outdoor season. His previous record was a toss of 16.78 meters (56-0.75), set at the Trinity Open on March 2.
Jones was fifth in the 100 out of 54 competitors. He broke the school mark of 10.64, jointly held by Paris Foster (Magnolia/Magnolia) and Bryce Johnson (Pearland/Dawson).
Foster currently sits fourth in the nation in the 100 with a time of 10.66, which he set at the TLU D3 Challenge on March 23. Foster is also fourth in the 110 Hurdles with a time of 14.62, also at the TLU D3 Challenge.
Jones also moved into the top 10 in the men's 200 with a time of 21.68 at Texas State.
For the TLU Women, sprinter Ashley Myers (Ingleside/Edna) worked on her endurance over the weekend and won the 400 at the Trinity Quad Meet. Myers won in a time of 1:00.11.
Myers still ranks fifth nationally in the 100, with a time of 12.18, set at the TLU D3 Challenge. She also holds a ranking of 10th in the 200 with a time of 25.34, also set at the D3 Challenge.
Ashley Rynard (Temple/Temple) won the 3,000 meters at the Trinity Quad Meet and moved into the top 10 of the D3 800 rankings with a time of 2:15.86 at Texas State.
Cortnee Priour (Victoria/Goliad) won the women's long jump at Trinity with a jump of 5.51 meters (18 feet, 1 inch), which equaled her season-best mark. Priour is 17th nationally in the D3 rankings for long jump.
Priour moved into the top 35 for triple jump with a leap of 11.04 meters (36-2.75) at Trinity on Sunday.
Tia Hart (Edna/Industrial) holds a D3 national ranking of ninth in the javelin after her toss of 41.14 meters (135 feet, 0 inches) at the TLU D3 Challenge two weeks ago.
Other Bulldog winners at the Trinity Quad Meet on Sunday included:
- Dejah Carr (Houston/Channelview), won women's shot put, 10.78 meters (35 feet, 4-1/2 inches)
- Hannah Kipp (Ledbetter/Round Top-Carmine), won women's discus, 38.99 meters (127 feet, 11 inches)
- Caleb Calderon (Austin/Akins), won men's 3,000 meters, 9:07.15
- men's 4x400 relay won - 3:23.53 (Darren Jones, Lester Boehm, Khristian Fairley, Paris Foster)
- Caimen McDonough (Canyon Lake/Canyon Lake), won men's high jump, 1.90 meters (6 feet, 2-3/4)
- Chad Wieland (Seguin/Navarro), won pole vault, 4.15 meters (13 feet, 7-1/4).
