Rynard starts indoor season with second-place showing in 800

HOUSTON -- Indoor Track & Field All-Americans Ashley Rynard and Garrett Garza got off to fast starts in the 2020 indoor season with each student-athlete grabbing a second-place finish Saturday in their event specialties.
 
At the FasTrak Collegiate Invitational in Houston, Rynard took second in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 18.04 seconds.
 
Rianna Vidales of Texas Wesleyan won the event with a time of 2:17.24.
 
Rynard also ran the indoor mile and recorded a top-five finish. She was fifth with a time of 5:15.59.
 
Garza bettered his All-America throw at last season's NCAA Division III Indoor Championships, where he finished eighth with a toss of 55 feet, 2 inches.
 
On Saturday, Garza started his indoor year with a mark of 55-8.25.
 
Lucas Ribeiro of Rice edged Garza by an inch for the meet win. Ribeiro recorded the winning toss on his final throw.
 
Garza's top throw also came on his sixth and final toss.

For the women's throwers, TLU junior Dejah Carr posted a pair of top-10 finishes with a fifth-place showing in the women's weight throw and a seventh-place result in the shot put.
 
Carr took fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 48-3.5. In the shot, Carr produced a mark of 39-2.5.
 
Carr's teammate, Tia Hart, finished 12th in the shot put with a mark of 35-0.25.
 
Among the top-15 TLU men's results, senior sprinter Paris Foster took 15th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.53, and Ezrael Powell placed sixth in the long jump with a leap of 22-1.5.
 
William Gattis was 14th in the triple jump with a mark of 42-4.25, and Jalen Starks finished 14th in the shot put with a toss of 44-2.75.
 
The meet, held at the University of Houston's Yeoman Field House, was comprised of school's from the NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA levels.
