David Mueller hired as new assistant tennis coach at Texas Lutheran

SEGUIN, Texas – John Strahl, Texas Lutheran's new head coach for men's and women's tennis, has hired long-time New Braunfels High School head tennis coach David Mueller as an assistant coach for the Bulldog tennis squads.

Mueller will continue as head coach for New Braunfels High School. Mueller retired from full-time teaching and coaching at New Braunfels at the conclusion of the 2015-16 school year, but he was rehired at New Braunfels on a part-time basis, for tennis coaching alone, starting in the 2016-17 school year.

As he has done for the past three years, Mueller will continue in a coaching-only capacity at New Braunfels as the Unicorns' head tennis coach. He has been the head tennis coach for the boys and girls teams at New Braunfels for 37 years.

Beginning this summer, Mueller makes the short commute to Seguin to assist his good friend John Strahl with the TLU Men's and Women's Tennis programs.

"I am excited about the opportunity to be over here at TLU with Coach Strahl and to grow the program and have the players, if they are not already in love with the game, fall in love with the game," said Mueller.

"When I was a young boy, I fell in love with tennis, and I was fortunate enough to move to San Marcos by the university tennis courts. And I just lived on those courts. I love all sports, but I focus more on tennis. And I've competed all my life, and I love it."

In his 37 years and counting at New Braunfels High School, Mueller has guided the Unicorns to eight state championships in team tennis and to a combined 25 singles, doubles, and mixed doubles state championships.

Starting in the fall of 2007, New Braunfels won seven straight state team tennis championships and added another title in the fall of 2015.

The Unicorns finished as the state team tennis runner-up in 1989, 2005, 2006, and 2014.

Mueller has a bachelor's degree from Southwest Texas State and a master's degree from Sam Houston State University.

While completing his master's degree at Sam Houston State, Mueller was the head women's tennis coach for the Bearkats in 1981 and the head men's tennis coach for the Bearkats in 1982.

Mueller has been the president of the Texas Tennis Coaches Association (TTCA) and has served on the TTCA board. He has been named the TTCA Coach of the Year twice and has also earned Coach of the Year honors from the San Antonio Express-News.

Mueller is the father of three adult children – Lindsay, Shelby, and Brandon.
