Texas Lutheran Women's Soccer receives fifth Team Academic Award in last six years

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Women's Soccer picked up its fifth United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award in the last six years on Thursday in recognition of its academic performance during the 2018-19 academic year.

A total of 992 college teams (345 men, 647 women) earned the Team Academic Award, including 257 schools who had both their men's and women's programs among the recipients.
 
United Soccer Coaches annually celebrates the academic achievements of high school and college soccer teams whose student-athletes collectively demonstrate a commitment to excellence in their studies over the course of a full academic year.
 
College Team Academic Award recipients are active members of the United Soccer Coaches College Services Program with a composite grade point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale for all players on the roster for the 2018-19 academic year.
 
TLU Women's Soccer posted a 3.13 team grade point average for the 2018-19 academic year. The Bulldogs are coached by Larry Schaffer, who is in his eighth season as head coach.
 
The five Team Academic Awards in the last six years - in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2019 - have come with Schaffer as head coach. The Bulldogs only previous Team Academic Award came in 2003.
 
The Bulldogs, 5-3-1 overall, open Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play this Friday and Sunday with matches at TLU's Gustafson Field against Austin College (5 p.m. Friday) and University of Dallas (noon Sunday).
