Top-ranked Bulldogs survive road tests at LeTourneau with pair of 6-3 victories

LONGVIEW, Texas -- Top-ranked and defending NCAA Division III national champion Texas Lutheran faced its first major tests of the 2020 season and responded with a pair of 6-3 victories at LeTourneau University.
The Bulldogs and YellowJackets each entered the non-conference doubleheader with 4-0 records. TLU's two wins puts the Bulldogs at 6-0. LeTourneau fell to 4-2.
TLU fell behind 3-0 in the early game, but the Bulldogs scored a run in the fourth, a run in the fifth, and four big runs in the sixth to post the 6-3 come-from-behind win.
Cassie Roche tied the game with a bases loaded walk in the sixth. Bailey Hudgeons scored the go-ahead run on wild pitch with the bases loaded.
Also in the sixth, Kelly Jurden hit an RBI double, and Casey Martin drove in the fourth run of the inning with a sacrifice bunt.
Sydney Ouellette tossed the final 4-1/3 innings to pick up her first collegiate win. Ouellette, a freshman right-hander, allowed just one hit and struck out two.
Ouellette came on in the second game as well and notched her third save of the season. The tying run was standing on-deck when Ouellette appeared in relief of Ashlyn Strother (3-0). The right-handed Strother, another freshman, went 5-1/3 innings and did not allow an earned run. She struck out five.
Ouellette tossed the final 1-2/3 innings and did not allow a hit. The only run scored against her was unearned.
Rebecca Snow and Chassety Raines each homered for TLU in the second game. Snow belted a solo home run in the fifth to give TLU a 2-0 lead.
Raines extended TLU's lead to 6-3 with a two-run shot in the seventh.

Snow was 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI in the late game. Madisyn Cates also had two hits, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk.
McKay Bloxham and Roche each had two hits in the second game. Jurden was 1-for-5 with a run scored an an RBI. In the second game, she stole her 98th career base, bringing her within two of Ashley Jacobsen's career mark for steals. Jacobsen ended her brilliant four-year career at TLU with an even 100 stolen bases.

TLU returns to Seguin for Tuesday's big non-conference doubleheader with the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Crusaders, ranked in the NFCA preseason Top 25, come into Ed Kruse Stadium (Morck Softball Field) for a 4 p.m. doubleheader. Live video and live stats will be available for both games on
