GENEVA, Ohio -- Texas Lutheran senior Garrett Garza finished as the national runner-up in the shot put at the 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

At the SPIRE Institute, Garza (Round Rock/Stony Point) tossed the shot a school-record 17.81 meters (58 feet, 5.25 inches) to claim his second All-America award of 2019. Garza was eighth in the indoor championships.

David Kornack, a senior from Wisconsin-Eau Claire, won the national championship with a heave of 19.32 meters (63-4.75). Kornack also won the 2019 indoor title.

Garza's finish is the top outdoor individual placement in TLU Outdoor Men's Track & Field history.

Marquis Brown (Refugio/Refugio) won a national indoor championship in the 400 meters in 2017. The TLU 4x100 relay team was the national runner-up in 2018.

Garza has been dominant all season in the shot put. He won his third consecutive SCAC Championship in the shot and won eight times total this spring.

Garza only lost to one DIII athlete this spring, and that second-place finish came against the national champion.

Garza has been ranked in the NCAA Division III's top five for most of the year.

Connor Thompson (Nederland/Nederland) raced in the 400 preliminaries and did not make the finals. Thompson finished 18th overall with a time of 49.48.

In addition to Jones's race in the 200, the Bulldogs will have Cortnee Priour (Victoria/Goliad) competing in the women's triple jump on Saturday. The triple jump competition starts at 10 a.m central. Jones and Priour will be the final two Bulldogs to compete in the 2019 championships.
