Centenary knocks off TLU 73-65 in Memorial Gymnasium

SEGUIN, Texas -- Centenary College (La.) knocked off the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs 73-65 Sunday in Memorial Gymnasium and prevented the Bulldogs from claiming sole possession of the SCAC regular-season championship.

TLU (16-9, 11-5 SCAC) will share the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season title with Southwestern, and the Pirates will be the top seed for the tournament, set for Feb. 22-24 at TLU. Southwestern had the tie-breaker for the top seed since TLU was swept by No. 3 seed Centenary during conference play.

The Bulldogs will be the No. 2 seed and will play the winner of the Centenary-Trinity quarterfinal match, to be played 7 p.m. Friday night in Seguin. The TLU semifinal match is set for a 7 p.m. tip-off on Saturday.

In Sunday's loss to Centenary, TLU shot 34.9 percent from the floor and 29.4 percent from the three-point line. The Bulldogs were 8-for-33 from the arc.

Centenary out-scored TLU 40-31 in the second half. TLU had a 34-33 lead at the break.

The Gents put four players in double figures. Kile Mingo scored 19 and had four rebounds, and Treylan Matthews scored 17 and also pulled down four rebounds.

Cedric Harris and Ty Prince each scored 11 for Centenary. Kaharri Carter collected 10 rebounds and added eight points.

Jacob Kouremetis (San Antonio/O'Connor), playing in his final regular-season home game, scored 17 and registered four rebounds and three assists. Fellow senior Nathan Josephs (San Antonio/Clark) added 16 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.

Senior forward Shawn Hamilton (San Antonio/MacArthur) scored 13 and grabbed 11 rebounds. He also had three blocks.

Centenary shot 40.3 percent (8-for-20) from the three-point line, and made 15 of 20 free throws.

The Bulldogs honored their six seniors in a pre-game ceremony.
