Southwestern knocks off SCAC-leading Bulldogs 93-83

SEGUIN, Texas -- Southwestern knocked off SCAC-leading Texas Lutheran 93-83 Tuesday night in TLU's Memorial Gymnasium.

The Pirates (11-12, 9-5 SCAC) shot 63 percent from the field in the second half and put four players in double figures.

Southwestern out-scored TLU 52-44 in the second half after holding a 41-39 lead at the break.

TLU dropped to 15-8 overall and to 10-4 in the SCAC.

The Bulldogs have a one-game lead over Southwestern and Centenary in the race for the top seed in the upcoming Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament, hosted by TLU on Feb. 22-24.

TLU has a half-game lead on Johnson & Wales (Colo.) for the regular-season title. Johnson & Wales, in transition to NCAA Division III, is not eligible for the SCAC post-season tournament.

Joel Martinez led the Pirates with 19 points and six rebounds. He added a pair of blocks and four assists.

Jake Holmes added 16 points and six rebounds. He had two steals and a block.

Southwestern shot only nine three-pointers on Tuesday, but the team made seven. TLU took 39 three-pointers and made 10.

Sebastian Andrade (El Paso/Americas) scored 24 points and had five rebounds. Nathan Josephs (San Antonio/Clark) and Jackson Willoughby (Port Aransas/Port Aransas) chipped in 14 and 12, respectively.

The Bulldogs return to action Friday and Sunday against Austin College and Centenary, respectively. Both games will be played in TLU's Memorial Gymnasium (Jim Shuler Court).
