Bulldogs Open Season with Southwestern-Concordia Opener

Results

GEORGETOWN, Texas -- Kicking off the 2023 season, the Texas Lutheran cross country team participated in the Southwestern-Concordia Opener hosted by Southwestern and Concordia Universities in Georgetown, Texas, Friday morning. The field hosted the following teams from across NCAA divisions from the state of Texas: Texas, Southwestern, St. Edward's, Concordia, Prairie View, Schreiner, and Huston-Tillotson.

MEN'S RECAP

Carlos Cura (Rankin/Rankin), an NCAA Regional Qualifier in 2022, led the Bulldogs in their season opening race with a time of 16:26.9 to finish 29th overall and seventh amongst Division-III runners in the 5K.

Following Cura was the pack of Wesley Holub (Wallis/Brazos), Isaiah Arriaga (Sugar Land/Dulles), and Nathan Sandelovic (Hallettsville/Hallettsville) who crossed 41st-43rd respectively.

Lucas Falcon (Victoria/Victoria East) wrapped the top five for the Bulldogs as the Bulldogs averaged a time of 17:07.

WOMEN'S RECAP

In the women's 4K, it was freshman Mackenzie Combs (New Braunfels/Canyon) leading the way - finishing 14th in a field of 67 runners with a time of 20:55.7, first amongst Division-III runners. Gianna Kennedy (El Paso/El Paso), following right behind Combs, finished 19th with a time of 21:51.0. Following Kennedy was sophomore Emma Etzler (Hallettsville/Hallettsville) posting a time of 21:58.3.

Aaliyah Leal (Ingleside/Aransas Pass) and Cristina Jaramillo (Port Lavaca/Calhoun) rounded out the top 5 for the Bulldogs. As a team, Texas Lutheran finished third overall in a field of seven teams and first amongst Division-III teams with an average time of 22:26. Texas would win the meet with an average time of 18:25.
