Volleyball Takes Down Transylvania in Five Sets

LEXINGTON, KY -- The Texas Lutheran volleyball team took down Transylvania - a NCAA Tournament qualifier a season ago - Friday afternoon to push their season opening win streak to six matches, winning 3-2 to stay undefeated at 6-0. It was the first of four matches for the Bulldogs in the Transy Invite in Lexington, Kentucky.

The Bulldogs (6-0, 0-0 SCAC) brought down the Pioneers (2-4, 0-0 HCAC) in five sets winning 25-22, 23-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-10.

Despite the Pioneers taking the 7-6 edge midway through the fifth set, Texas Lutheran took five of the next seven points to take the lead and inevitably close the match on a 9-3 run. Tanyse Moehrig (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) was huge in the decisive fifth set with four kills and Paige Day (San Antonio/Reagan) produced two pivotal service aces in the Bulldogs final 9-3 run to clinch the match.

Shavonne Respondek (San Antonio/Madison) led the Bulldogs with 29 assists while Julia Chew (Cypress/Cy-Fair) followed close behind with 22 assists. Each would register double-doubles adding 17 and 12 digs respectively. Chew would also register two service aces.

Leading the offensive effort was Brylie Nedd (Sealy/Sealy) with 13 kills, Tanyse Moehrig with 11 kills, and Madison Weisinger (Friendswood/Friendswood) with 10 kills. Weisinger was also a force defensively, tallying seven blocks along the Bulldogs front. Maddy Schultz (Richmond/Needville) added six blocks while Peyton Sulak (Needville/Needville) added four blocks to go along with a team-high four service aces.

Libero Lexi Morris's (Victoria/Victoria West) hot start continued as she finished the match with 25 digs. Celie Contreras (San Marcos/San Marcos) finished with 16 digs with four coming in the fifth and final set.
