TLU Volleyball reports to camp with 18 student-athletes

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Women's Volleyball and second-year head coach Phyllis Fowler reported to campus last Friday and have been in preseason camp in preparation for their season-opening tournament, the Bulldog Challenge on Aug. 30-31.

The Bulldogs opened preseason camp with 18 student-athletes on the team.

The Bulldogs return 11 players from last season's team. Among the Bulldogs' returners is senior Jaci Chambers (Baytown/Goose Creek Memorial), who was named the 2018 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Backrow Player of the Year and earned a spot on the All-SCAC Second Team. Chambers led the conference in digs, with 681, and in digs per set (6.03).

"This has been a very smooth start to our week of two-a-days," said Fowler. "The girls are working through some expected soreness. They share the same excitement about our upcoming season as well. With six incoming players, they are getting to know each other on the court."

TLU opens its Bulldog Challenge on Aug. 30 with matches against Howard Payne and Louisiana College. The match with HPU begins at noon in TLU's Tostengard Activity Center - Susan Duke Court. The 4:30 p.m. match against Louisiana College will take place in TLU's Memorial Gymnasium - Jim Shuler Court.

On Aug. 31, the Bulldogs face Sul Ross State at 10 a.m. in Tostengard and meet McMurry at 2:15 p.m. in Memorial.

The Bulldogs went 9-21 in Fowler's first year with the team. The Bulldogs were 6-10 in SCAC play and finished seventh in the league. The Bulldogs just missed qualifying for a spot in the 2018 conference tournament.

TLU will host the 2019 SCAC Championships, set for Nov. 8-10 in Tostengard Activity Center.
