Howard Payne sends TLU home with five-set loss


BROWNWOOD, Texas -- The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets stunned the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs in five 22-25, 25-19, 25-19, 20-25, 15-13 Tuesday night. 

At Brownwood Coliseum, HPU never trailed in the final game behind a fifth-game .130 hitting percentage to TLU's -.050. 

TLU dropped to 8-19 overall with the non-conference loss. HPU, former foe of the American Southwest Conference, moved to 5-21 overall. 

For the match, TLU hit just . 048, with 46 kills and 37 errors on 186 attack attempts. HPU hit .134 with 50 kills and 26 errors on 179 attempts. HPU served two more aces and totaled two more blocks.

TLU made 13 hitting errors over the final two games. 

Madison Weisinger (Friendswood/Friendswood) led the Bulldogs with 10 kills on 23 attack attempts. Weisinger also collected seven digs, an ace and three blocks (1 solo, 2 assists).

Peyton Sulak (Needville/Needville) and Savhannah Kitchens (Inez/Industrial) contributed sevens kills each. Kitchens added two solo blocks and a block assist. 

Jaci Chambers (Baytown/Goose Creek Memorial) paced TLU with 31 digs. Jennifer Rodriguez (San Antonio/McCollum) picked up 10 digs. Kelly Jurden (Brenham/Brenham) dished out 38 assists and 20 digs. 

TLU hits the road for the final Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference crossover in Shreveport, La. The Bulldogs play Southwestern University Friday afternoon and face host Centenary College and Austin College on Saturday.
