Jones, Rynard, Garza each grab All-America honors at D3 indoor championships
BOSTON -- Texas Lutheran student-athletes Darren Jones (Waller/Waller), Ashley Rynard (Temple/Temple), and Garrett Garza (Round Rock/Stony Point) each grabbed NCAA Division III All-America honors Saturday at the 2019 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.
At the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center, the Bulldogs collected All-America honors from Jones in the men's 60-meter dash, Rynard in the women's 800 meters, and Garza in the men's shot put.
Jones took third in the 60. With 20 meters to go, Jones appeared tied for the lead with eventual national champion Kai Cole of Wesley. Cole pulled ahead late in the race and won in a time of 6.80.
Jones and Calvin Jordan of Benedictine (Ill.) posted times of 6.83. Jordan took the runner-up spot when the result went to the thousandth of a second. Jordan clocked a 6.824, and Jones posted a 6.827.
Jones' time is a new school record. The All-America honor is his first in indoor track & field. He has one outdoor track & field All-America citation after running on the 2018 national runner-up 4x100 relay team.
The third-place finish is the second-best indoor result in TLU Men's Indoor Track & Field history. Marquis Brown won the 2017 indoor national title in the 400.
TLU Indoor Women's Track & Field also has a national championship - the 2007 indoor 4x400 relay. Rynard was looking to add her name to the women's champions list.
In the 800 final, Rynard ran in a pack that chased Phoebe Aguiar of Macalester from the start. Aguiar led nearly wire-to-wire and won in a time of 2:07.50.
Rynard took sixth in a time of 2:13.09. The All-America honor is the first for Rynard in either indoor or outdoor. She was ninth in last year's outdoor 800.
Garza also captured his first All-America award. He placed eighth in the shot put with a toss of 16.81 meters (55 feet, 2 inches). The top eight qualify for All-America honors in all events.
Garza's best mark came on his fourth toss. He is TLU's first indoor NCAA All-American in a men's throwing event.
David Kornack of Wisconsin-Eau Claire won the shot put with a toss of 19.83 meters (65 feet, 0.75 inches).
