Texas Lutheran Rolls Sul Ross State to Close Non-Conference Slate

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran went on the offensive early and led from wire-to-wire Thursday afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium to secure an 81-58 win over Sul Ross State to conclude its regular season non-conference schedule. The Bulldogs improve to 9-3 (2-1 SCAC) and own the best overall record in the SCAC heading into the Christmas break.

The 9-3 record is the best start under the direction of head coach Troy Patterson. This is the best start for Texas Lutheran since opening the 2016-17 season 9-3. The Bulldogs have opened a season 9-3 or better just three times since becoming an NCAA institution at the turn of the century.

Lauren Sansano (San Antonio/FEAST), who was named to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week earlier this week, and Audry Hornaday (Mission/Sharyland) led the way for the Bulldogs with 12 points each. Sansano added four assists, three rebounds, a block, and a steal while Hornaday dished out two assists off the bench for the Bulldogs.

Sophomore Davi'Yanna Jones (San Antonio/Stevens) was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field, finishing with 11 points off the bench. Sophomore forward Sarahi Jones (Los Fresnos/Los Fresnos) finished with eight points and a game-high six rebounds. Calli Perez (San Antonio/Stevens) would finish with a game and career-high five assists.

After a slow start in the first quarter, the Bulldogs would build up a near 20-point lead that would shrink to a twelve point lead entering halftime. Texas Lutheran opened the game on a 10-3 run and the second period was reminiscent of the first, opening the period on a 12-4 run. Texas Lutheran would lead 39-27 at halftime, with 14 Bulldogs seeing action in the half. Juliana Tapia (San Antonio/O'Connor) would lead the Bulldogs at the half with six points aided by a career-high two three-pointers.

Texas Lutheran would push its lead to 20-plus over the course of the third quarter as they would outscore the Lobos 25-14 in the period. The Bulldogs would keep that cushion and cruise through the fourth quarter as every active Bulldog saw playing time on Thursday.

Following a break for the holidays, the Bulldogs will return to action on Friday, December 29 as they return to SCAC play by welcoming the Austin College 'Roos to Seguin. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM at Memorial Gymnasium and will be streamed on TLU+.
