Career-Highs Power TLU Past Schreiner, 80-48, in SCAC Opener

SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran women's basketball team put its foot on the gas to close out a decisive 80-48 win over Schreiner in the 2023-24 SCAC opener Friday night. Sarahi Jones (Los Fresnos/Los Fresnos) recorded a career-high 14 points on 7-of-14 shooting while Emerald St. Laurent (The Woodlands/Oak Ridge) added a career-high 10 points. The Mountaineers fall to 1-5, 0-1 SCAC while the Bulldogs improve to 7-1, 1-0 SCAC. The 7-1 start matches the best start since 1973-74's 7-1 start under TLU Hall of Famer, Susan Duke.

TLU piled up a 44-24 lead in the first half, shooting 37.3 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes. TLU maintained a 27-19 advantage on the glass - including 16 offensive rebounds. St. Laurent scored all 10 of her points in the first half. Sarahi Jones and Kailee Mulkey (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) had packed stat lines by halftime with Jones scoring 8 points, grabbing four rebounds, dishing two assists and tallying one steal while Mulkey scored six of her 12 points in the first half in addition to six rebounds and four assists entering the locker room.

Texas Lutheran would cement their win in the third quarter matching their first quarter 24 point effort to take 68-39 lead into the fourth. Jones and Mulkey would combine for 14 points in their final period of serious action Friday. TLU would cruise through the fourth to the 80-48 victory.

TLU would finish out at 38.8 percent overall from the floor to Schreiner's 35.3 percent. TLU committed 13 turnovers while the patented TLU defense forced the Mountaineers into 30 turnovers. The Bulldogs also won on the boards, outrebounding the Mountaineers, 52-36.

Senior Kailey Lacy (Pflugerville/Hendrickson) finished with a season-high 15 points and five rebounds off the bench, connecting on five threes on nine attempts. Lacy continues to have the hot hand against the Mountaineers as she has made 19 threes over the course of her last three games against the Mountaineers. Kailee Mulkey finished with 12 points, a team-high seven rebounds, three steals, and matched her career-high with six assists. Brianna Wilson (Austin/Cotulla) added seven points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

Texas Lutheran wraps their homestand and conference opening weekend tomorrow, Dec. 2, as they welcome rival Trinity to Memorial Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 6 PM with a crowd theme of "Rave Night (Wear Neon Colors)."
