Texas Lutheran Takes Care of Concordia (TX), 79-40

SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran women's basketball team opened a three-game week with a 79-40 win over future SCAC foe, Concordia (TX), on Monday at Memorial Gymnasium.

The Bulldogs improved to 6-1 to match their best start since the 1987-88 season when then Texas Lutheran College was a member of the NAIA and started 6-1 under 2023 Texas Lutheran Wall of Honor inductee, Lana Urbanek.

Kailee Mulkey (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) led the Bulldogs with 22 points, one shy of matching her career-high, on 7-of-9 shooting. Mulkey would score all 22 points in the first half, only playing five minutes in the second half. The junior guard would knock down all three of her three point attempts and would add six rebounds, four assists, four steals, and a block - all team-highs.

Sarahi Jones (Los Fresnos/Los Fresnos) would be the only other Bulldogs in double figures, finishing with 10 points and six rebounds. Davi'Yanna Jones (San Antonio/Stevens) scored eight points and tallied three steals. Irianna Rollins (Pflugerville/Connally), a transfer from Concordia, scored a career-high six points off the bench for the Bulldogs.

Texas Lutheran opened the game on a 12-2 run and would lead 23-6 after the first quarter, shooting 62.6% in the opening period. Texas Lutheran replicated their efforts in the second quarter with swarming defense and efficient shooting, outpacing the Tornados 26-12 in the second to take a 48-18 halftime lead. Mulkey would score 13 points in the second quarter alone.

Texas Lutheran would lead from wire-to-wire - leading by as many as 39 points - cruising through the second half with every Bulldog getting at least five minutes of play time.

Up next, TLU begins SCAC conference play on Friday, Dec. 1, as the Schreiner Mountaineers travel to Seguin for the conference opener. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM with a crowd theme of "Christmas/Ugly Sweaters."
