Women's Basketball Dominates Second Half to Defeat Cal Lutheran 67-54

SEGUIN, Texas -- After trailing by two entering halftime, an impressive second half display that saw the Bulldogs hold the Regals to two points in the third quarter aided the Bulldogs in a 67-54 victory over Cal Lutheran in a rare Tuesday 1 PM tip-off at Memorial Gymnasium. Davi'Yanna Jones (San Antonio/Stevens) led the Bulldogs with 10 points, six rebounds, and three steals as Texas Lutheran to a program-best 5-0 on the season.

Trailing by five midway late in the second quarter, Texas Lutheran (5-0) clawed its way back in a matchup that was highly contested early on against Cal Lutheran (0-3). It was a total team effort as Jones would be the only Bulldog to finish in double-figures with 12 Bulldogs scoring at least one point Tuesday afternoon. Kailee Mulkey (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) and Audry Hornaday (Mission/Sharyland) would score nine points each with Mulkey adding six rebounds. Bri Wilson (Austin/Cotulla), who was named SCAC Player of the Week on Monday, grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in addition to six points. As a team, Texas Lutheran forced 21 turnovers.

Jones would score four of her ten points in the opening period as the Bulldogs tied 15-all with the Regals in the opening ten minutes of play.

Neither team could put a run together in the second quarter as both teams struggled from the field but it would be the Regals who would take a two-point, 35-33, lead into the halftime break.

The Bulldogs defense came alive in the third quarter, shutting the Regals out until the 3:27 mark in the third quarter, and holding Cal Lutheran to two points total in the third. The Regals would shoot 1-of-11 (9.1%) from the field in the third period. The third quarter would effectively turn into an 18-2 run for the Bulldogs led by five points from Kayla Presley (Kyle/San Marcos) and seven forced turnovers from the Bulldogs. Presley finished with five points, three rebounds, and a team-high four assists.

Texas Lutheran would take their 51-37 lead into the fourth and crusie the rest of the way leading by as many as 19 points in the fourth.

Texas Lutheran continues their homestand tomorrow, Wednesday, Nov. 22, when it hosts Pacific Lutheran. Tip-off is set for 4 PM at Memorial Gymnasium and will be streamed on TLU+. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
