Late three-pointers carry Schreiner to conference win over Texas Lutheran

KERRVILLE, Texas -- The Schreiner Mountaineers overcame a late Texas Lutheran lead with an 11-2 run that included three consecutive three-pointers in a 77-69 conference victory Saturday against the Bulldogs.
 
The win moved Schreiner a game-and-a-half ahead of TLU in the race for the fourth seed for the upcoming Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship.
 
Schreiner now holds an overall record of 8-9 and a conference mark of 6-4.
 
TLU dropped to 7-11 overall and to 5-6 in the SCAC.
 
Schreiner won its third straight conference game. TLU lost its third straight.
 
Dominique Campos hit a three-pointer for TLU to give the Bulldogs a 64-62 lead at the 4:10 mark. Morgan Rodriguez gave TLU its final lead, 67-66, with a layup at the 2:17 mark.
 
The Mountaineers then hit three-pointers on three consecutive possessions to take the lead and stretch it to 75-69 with 53 seconds remaining on the clock.
 
Miranda Vallejo, Josline Hernandez, and Zahra Cross made the consecutive three-pointers for Schreiner.
 
Cross made a pair of free throws with 19 seconds remaining to close out the scoring.
 
Cross scored a game-high 26 points and added five rebounds and three assists. She was 9-for-16 from the field and 4-of-8 from the arc.
 
Hernandez chipped in 13 points and four rebounds. Vallejo had 10 points and three assists off the Mountaineer bench.
 
Campos led the Bulldogs with 20 points on 7-of-19 shooting. She made three three-pointers and had three rebounds.
 
Morgan Rodriguez contributed 14 points and four rebounds, and Abby Hroch recorded 10 points and five rebounds.
 
Cami Davis led TLU with 10 rebounds. The senior guard also scored eight points.
 
TLU and Schreiner shot 43.3 percent and 43.9 percent, respectively, from the field, but the Mountaineers took six more shots and made five more three-pointers.
 
Schreiner out-rebounded TLU 45-37 and had a 17-2 edge in fast break points.
 
TLU returns to action on Jan. 31 with a 7:30 p.m. road game in Georgetown, Texas against Southwestern University.
