Acero, Relays Record Breaking Days Highlight Day One of SCAC Championships

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran men's track and field program opened the 2024 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championships with record-breaking marks and impressive performances on Saturday on the campus of Trinity University. Texas Lutheran sits in a tie with Colorado College for second place in the men's standings with 95 points behind leader Trinity, the reigning champions, who leads with 131 points.

Ezra Acero (San Antonio/Harlan), who entered Saturday ranked fifth in Division-III got the day started on a high note, breaking the SCAC Championship record with an event winning mark of 4.65m (15' 3") to repeat as SCAC Champion.

Texas Lutheran would sweep at the podium in the hammer throw with junior Riley Denman (Pearland/Pearland) repeating as SCAC Champion in the event with a mark of 49.70m (163' 1"). Denman would be joined in the top three by teammates Chase Cook (Austin/McNeil) (46.60m, (152' 11") and Weston Geiger (Shiner/St. Paul) (44.13m, 144' 9").

Dalon Harris (Garland/Lakeview Centennial) gave TLU their third event win of the morning session with a 16.42m (53' 10.5") mark to win the shot put. The mark is a season-best and moves Harris back amongst the top 20 in Division-III. Geiger would also earn a third place finish in the shot put with a mark of 13.24m (43' 5.25").

Texas Lutheran opened the evening session of Saturday's championship events with a bang - repeating as the 4x100m relay champions with a SCAC record breaking time of 40.81 seconds. The time turned in by the relay team comprised of  Bryce Powell-Chimene (Dayton/Dayton), Rickey Franks (Rockport/Rockport-Fulton), Justin Freeney (Montgomery/Lake Creek), and Weston Guzman (McAllen/McAllen) ranks fourth in all of NCAA Division-III as of Saturday night. Franks would also finish third in the 400m hurdles with a time of 56.38 seconds while Powell-Chimene would add six more points to the TLU tally with a third place finish in the 200m dash with a time of 21.64 seconds.
