Texas Lutheran's Scottie Reyes named SCAC Men's Track & Field Tri-Newcomer of the Year

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran second-year freshman Scottie Reyes (Dilley/Dilley) has been named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tri-Newcomer of the Year for Men's Track & Field.

Reyes won both the discus and the shot put at the 2021 SCAC Championships and earned All-SCAC honors in the hammer throw with a third-place finish.

At the conference meet in Seguin, Reyes' winning shot put toss of 15.74 meters (51 feet, 7-3/4 inches) was the third-longest toss in championship meet history. His 26 total points earned at the two-day conference meet were the third-most ever by any individual.

Reyes qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the discus. He was the first male student-athlete from TLU to qualify for the national meet in the discus.

Reyes made the national meet after a school-record toss in the discus of 50.17 (164-7) during the season. He was one of just three freshmen in the 17-man field, and his 14th-place finish was tops among all first-year throwers.

An All-South Region honoree of the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) in both the discus and the shot put, Reyes is the fourth TLU male to earn Newcomer of the Year honors. He is the first since Michael Wong received similar recognition in 2018.

The SCAC Track & Field honors were determined after exclusive voting by the conference's head coaches.

Josh Fry of Colorado College was selected as the Men's Track Athlete of the Year, and Sean Majors of Trinity earned Field Athlete of the Year honors.

The voting for Newcomer of the Year produced a three-way tie between Reyes, Justin Johnson of Trinity, and James Settles of Colorado College.

Rounding out the balloting, the Trinity coaching staff earned Men's Staff of the Year honors.
