Rynard, Garza collect SCAC weekly honors after big performances at UIW

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran junior middle-distance runner Ashley Rynard (Temple/Temple) and senior thrower Garrett Garza (Round Rock/Stony Point) each collected Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference athlete of the week honors earlier this week.

Rynard was named the SCAC Female Track Athlete of the Week for the first time this track season, and Garza was named the SCAC Male Field Athlete of the Week for the third time this season.

Rynard surged to the top of the SCAC in the 1,500 with a time of 4:41.86 on the Friday night portion of the UIW Invitational meet in San Antonio. She missed first place to a Division I runner by only .10.

Meanwhile, the next day in the high winds, Rynard battled to a second-place finish overall (to an unattached runner), and first collegiately against mainly Division I competition with a time of 2:15.88. She currently holds the top spot in that event at 2:15.86 - which is nearly three seconds ahead of the number two competitor in the 800 for the SCAC.

Garza continued his dominance in the shot put event at the UIW Invitational in San Antonio, besting all college competitors in all divisions with a toss of 16.51 meters (54-2).

Not to be outdone in the discus, Garza threw to the top of the SCAC with a third-place overall in the collegiate competition (only Division 1 competitors ahead of him) at a mark of 47.48 meters (155-9).

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC Women's Track:
Senior Allysa Warling of Colorado College posted an outstanding performance in the 5k at the Wichita State Track Invite on Friday where she ran a 18:14.71 beating her previous best of 19:49. Sophomore Olive Pertiut of Trinity ran two new personal bests at the UCSD Triton Invitational. She doubled the 800/1500 with a 2:25.65 and 4:55.68. Freshman Anna Wilgenbusch of Dallas set personal-best times in both the 1500 (5:06) & 5k (18:54) this weekend at the East Texas Invitational. She finished 14th & fifth, respecitvely, in each event.
