Jones, Rynard qualify for NCAA DIII Championship finals at indoor nationals
BOSTON -- Texas Lutheran's Darren Jones (Waller/Waller) and Ashley Rynard (Temple/Temple) will race Saturday for NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field National Championships in the men's 60-meter dash and the women's 800, respectively, after qualification in the preliminary rounds Friday at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.
Jones, Rynard and TLU shot put stand-out Garrett Garza (Round Rock/Stony Point) all will be in action Saturday in Boston, and all three have expectations for high finishes in the championship finals.
Jones races at 1:20 p.m. central / 2:20 p.m. easter in the men's 60. Garza competes in the men's shot put, starting at 2:15 p.m. central / 3:15 p.m. eastern. Rynard takes to the track in the 800 at 2:55 p.m. central / 3:55 p.m. eastern.
Jones takes the fourth-fastest time into the eight-man final. Rynard brings the third-fastest time into the eight-woman final. Garza has the fifth-best shot put toss in DIII entering the shot put final.
In the 60's first prelim Friday, Jones hit the line with a school-record time of 6.84 seconds. The three heat winners automatically moved to the Saturday final. The next five fastest times also advanced to the final.
Jones won his heat by .01 over Josh Koenecke of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Koenecke also qualified for Saturday's final.
Jones will be in lane 3 for the championship final. The final will take place at 1:20 p.m. central / 2:20 p.m. eastern.
Rynard will be one of eight women vying for the NCAA DIII's 800 crown. She posted the third-fastest time of the preliminary round with a 2:13.06. She will start in lane 1 for the final.
Rynard finished third in her Friday preliminary round, but she was in the fast heat, which included top qualifiers Phoebe Aguiar of Macalester and Ayden Eickhoff of Bates.
Both Jones, Rynard and Garza competed in the 2018 NCAA DIII Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Jones was an All-American with TLU's national runner-up 4x100 relay, and Rynard finished ninth in the 800 (one spot out of All-America designation).
